Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Award – Training and Practice Expedition in the Chiltern Hills.

Last weekend, Year 10 and Year 11 participants embarked on a 3-day, 2-night training and practice expedition in the beautiful Chiltern Hills. The expedition, while physically and mentally demanding, was designed to be both achievable and enjoyable.

The experience emphasised personal growth and development through outdoor activities. By participating in shared experiences in nature, the participants were able to build key skills such as initiative, teamwork, communication, leadership, and problem-solving. Overcoming challenges together strengthened their emotional resilience and fostered empathy for others.

Working as part of a team in the outdoors, while also facing moments of isolation, helped participants develop greater self-reliance and boosted their self-confidence. The journey truly demonstrated that it is not just about the hike, but about the purpose behind it.

Led by East Coast Outdoors CIC, the expedition began with essential activities such as setting up tents, first aid training, and emergency procedures. The second day involved a 17km round-trip journey, and the highlight was reaching the top of Ivinghoe Beacon. Participants also gained valuable skills in meal preparation, sleeping outdoors, and cooking on a Trangia stove, all of which enhanced their overall outdoor experience.
