girls reading books

English

At Palmers Green High School one of the English Department’s strongest principles is a belief in the value of independent learning. This is built into the curriculum from Year 7 to Year 11. Pupils are taught in small groups which helps each girl develop greater confidence and discover her voice within a secure and supportive environment.

English Literature is taught as an integral part of English at all stages at PGHS and, as such, pupils encounter a variety of texts, from classical to contemporary, and are thereby encouraged to become enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers.  Theatre trips and visits are arranged throughout the academic year to enhance pupils’ understanding and enjoyment of the texts studied in class.

That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.

Years 7 & 9

Years 7-9 follow an integrated programme drawing links between skills and texts through diverse and engaging material. They undertake assessments in speaking and listening, reading and writing. Pupils work individually, in groups and in drama-related activities based on texts studied in class. They participate in shared class readings of a Shakespeare play, a novel, a selection of poetry and undertake an independent reading project. In preparation for their IGCSEs, Year 9 pupils are encouraged to undertake a critical analysis of language and the effect it creates.

Year 10 &11

Pupils in Year 10 & 11 follow the IGCSE syllabus in English Language and English Literature. Click here to link to the IGCSE page.
